Team Coaching Program

Helping teams to achieve improvements that they have only imagined

The Team Coaching Program strengthens the value and quality of health and social care systems by equipping frontline, interdisciplinary clinical and support microsystems with practical knowledge, structured processes, and proven tools, including the Microsystem Improvement Process (MIP). Designed for leaders at all levels, frontline professionals, coaches, and change agents, the program builds capability where it matters most—at the point of care and service.

Grounded in multiple disciplines, theories, and original research, the program focuses on developing improvement capability and effective group dynamics, especially during times of uncertainty and complexity. Central to the approach is the discipline of team coaching, inspired by Edgar Schein’s concept of “helping” rather than “telling.” Through curiosity, humble inquiry, and meaningful dialogue, participants learn to build strong relationships, explore new possibilities, foster innovation, and achieve measurable improvements.

This intensive, highly interactive six-part series blends the art and science of team dynamics, team coaching, improvement science (including measurement), and effective communication. Participants engage in both group and individualized learning, applying a four-phase team coaching model with guidance from experienced faculty.

Coaches in Training (CITS) will gain:

  • Foundational knowledge in applied clinical microsystem theory and practice
  • A structured team coaching model to support interprofessional teams in improving care, communication, and team performance

I now see coaching as helping the team to understand their microsystem, determine what's important for patients, families, and staff and figure out how to bring excellence to their unit. Ownership and accountability for the outcomes of the unit lie with the members of the microsystem and the coach's role is to support them towards independently being able to continuously improve.
