Dr. Marjorie Godfrey, Executive Director of The Microsystem Academy, was appointed on November 1, 2024, to the position of Chair of the Expert Panel (EP) on Quality Health Care at the Annual American Academy of Nursing (AAN) Meeting in Washington, DC after serving for 18 months as Vice-Chair.
The American Academy of Nursing serves the public by advancing health policy and practice through generating, synthesizing, and disseminating nursing knowledge. Academy Fellows are inducted into the organization for their extraordinary contributions to improving health locally and globally. With over 2,900 Fellows, the Academy represents nursing's most accomplished policy, research, administration, practice, and academia leaders. Dr. Godfrey was inducted as a Fellow in 2014.
The Academy's 23 Expert Panels are foundational to the collective knowledge that supports the Academy as a whole. Expert Panels maximize their members' analytical skills and networks to review the current trends, research, and issues within their field. Individual experts support consensus building, within and across Expert Panels, to create a body of work that impacts sound policy change and is representative of the larger profession. This work can include policy proposals, testimony, manuscripts, policy briefs, recommendations, advocacy papers, position statements, and research agendas.
“Collaborating with and leading dedicated colleagues on the American Academy of Nursing's Expert Panel for Quality in Health Care is a privilege. Together, we are working to shape national policy and advance best practices in patient care. As nursing leaders, practitioners, and researchers, we have the power to make a difference that truly matters” says Dr. Godfrey. “The AAN partners with many organizations such as American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Nursing Community Coalition (NCC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Senate Appropriations Committee, Labor, Health, and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies, NIH to inform and influence health care policy in the United States.”
The Quality Health Care Expert Panel motivates progress among policy leaders. It influences at the international, national and state levels to articulate and promote nursing's contributions to defining and measuring elements of quality health care while also providing new models of high-quality, safe and efficacious health care services.
Current topics the EP is focused on include:
