Tina is a practicing general obstetrician-gynecologist at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. She is Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Community and Family Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School. Tina is also Program Director for the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Leadership Preventive Medicine Residency, a unique residency focused on the improvement of health care that offers combined training in Preventive Medicine and another residency or fellowship offered at Dartmouth. She holds a faculty appointment in the DHMC Patient Safety and Training Center and teaches in the MPH program at The Dartmouth Institute. Tina’s major interests include teaching and evaluating resident competence. She is board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Preventive Medicine.

Margie is Director of The Dartmouth Institute Microsystem Academy and Instructor for The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, Lebanon, NH. She is a national and international leader of designing and implementing improvement strategies targeting the place where patients, families, and care teams meet the clinical microsystem. Margie’s primary interest is engaging inter-professional health care professionals in learning about and improving local health care delivery systems with a focus on patients, professionals, processes and outcomes. Margie is co-author of the best selling textbooks, Quality by Design (2007) and Value By Design (2011) and the lead author and architect of the Clinical Microsystems: A Path to Healthcare Excellence series.

Maria’s focus is overall program management for quality improvement coaching in our customized programs. She works closely with teams and coaches to provide feedback and advice on ways to improve their experience in the program.  Maria joined the Microsystem Academy team in 2015 and brings a strong background in healthcare administration to the team.

She is also responsible for the overall design and technical experience for those online programs.  Ashleigh joined the Microsystem Academy team in 2015 and brings a strong background in business and engineering to the team.

Cherie provides administrative support for the Dartmouth Institute Microsystem Academy team in Lebanon, NH. She joined the Microsystem Academy team in April 2016 and works closely with the program coordinators to assist with behind-the-scenes activities.

Teaching Team

Nan Cochran, MD

Nan Cochran, MD

Nan developed and continues to direct On Doctoring, the interviewing and physical diagnosis course at Geisel. She received the Schumann Fellowship in 1999 to learn and teach motivational interviewing. She has done research in how to integrate shared decision making into primary care settings and how to teach SDM communication skills to clinicians and students. Nan has studied negotiation through two courses at Harvard Law School, most recently in an intensive course in January 2013. As a faculty member and president-elect of the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare, she does faculty development and consulting in the areas of team building, negotiation and conflict management, motivational interviewing, and shared decision making.

Steve is a Service Improvement Manager working at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH) NHS Foundation Trust. He joined STH in August 2008. His current work focuses on using a Clinical Microsystem approach to building capability and delivering quality improvement across the Trust. A graduate of the Dartmouth Institute eCoach-the-Coach programme in 2011, Steve introduced the microsystem team coaching improvement methodology to STH and has coached many Microsystems, working with these front line multidisciplinary teams to deliver measurable quality improvements. He is the lead faculty coach for the Sheffield Microsystem Coaching Academy, working closely with the microsystem academy team from Dartmouth to translate and deliver the programme for the local context. Steve also works with the Microsystem Academy as measurement faculty for the Cystic Fibrosis Canada and the Ireland ED improvement programmes.

Kathleen Iannacchino, MS, RN

Kathleen Iannacchino, MS, RN

Kathleen Iannacchino specializes in applying the concepts of accelerated change in work improvement in complex environments. She facilitates, teaches and coaches improvement science using applied microsystem theory in a variety of healthcare settings. She is especially interested in working with healthcare professionals in the process of patient and family enrollment and participation in the improvement of outcomes. She is currently a principle consultant with The Dartmouth Institute Microsystem Academy continuously learning and applying the theory of clinical microsystem theory in diverse healthcare environments in the US and Canada (as a coach for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, focusing on leadership and learning for health care improvement collaboratives).

Pam Kittleson, RPh is a Senior Improvement Coach for the University of Wisconsin Medical Foundation. She is a pharmacist and clinical quality improvement professional with over 14 years of experience in the UW Health Organization. Pam’s focus for the past 5 years has been on implementing the microsystems approach within UW Health’s primary care clinics; a part of the organizations 5 year strategic plan. She is also currently responsible for training staff to be embedded “improvement coaches” within their clinic. Pam is especially interested working with healthcare professionals on teamwork and including patient and family participation in the improvement work. Pam holds a BS in Pharmacy and from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa and holds a Level One Coaching Credential from The Dartmouth Institute Microsystem Academy.

Randy is a faculty member of The Dartmouth Institute Microsystem Academy’s eCoach-the-Coach Program, a private consultant at Randy Messier, LLC, and an associate at the Tupelo Group. He is certified as an NCQA Primary Care Medical Home Content Expert as well as a Level 3 Clinical Microsystems Coach. Randy consults with many hospital based and private primary care clinics, as well as with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. He also consults with the Vermont Medical Societies Physician Foundation working to create physician leadership and education communities. Randy has 28 years of experience in all aspects of health care from laboratory and hospital facility based management to outpatient primary care clinic management as well as NCQA Medical Home and Community Care Team development within VT, NH, ME, and VA. Randy is Adjunct Clinical Faculty and a member of the Curriculum Committee in the Medical Laboratory Sciences program at the University of Vermont.

Brant Oliver is lead improvement measurement faculty for the Dartmouth Institute Microsystem Academy. Dr. Oliver is a healthcare improvement scientist with specific expertise in measurement for improvement. He is Assistant Professor, School of Nursing, MGH Institute of Health Professions, in Boston MA, Adjunct Assistant Professor of the Dartmouth Institute and of Community & Family Medicine and Psyhiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College in Hanover NH, and Faculty Senior Scholar for the Department of Veterans Affairs National Quality Scholars (VAQS) Fellowship program. He is a dual-board certified nurse practitioner in family practice and psychiatry and practices as a multiple sclerosis and mental health specialist at the Multiple Sclerosis Specialty Care Program at Concord Hospital in Concord, NH.

Katherine Stevenson, MSc, BScPT, BA (Honours)

Katherine Stevenson, MSc, BScPT, BA (Honours)

From 2004 to 2009, Katherine worked with Saskatchewan’s Health Quality Council (HQC) in a variety of positions, including Senior Quality Improvement Consultant and Program Director. In her time with HQC, Katherine led the Quality as a Business Strategy, Releasing Time to Care, and Academic Initiatives projects, as well as the development of HQC’s strategy looking at whole system transformation. She is currently a doctoral student and adjunct lecturer at the University of Jonkoping in Sweden, Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Saskatchewan, and a physical therapist. In 2012, Katherine launched her own business, the Groundwork Strategy, where she provides teaching, coaching, and facilitation to individuals, teams, and organizations wanting to work with technical and relational approaches to improvement in health, education, and social care. Katherine holds a BA (Honours) in English, a BSc in Physical Therapy, and a MSc. in Community Health and Epidemiology, all from the University of Saskatchewan.

Deborah Ward, RN

Deborah is the Senior Quality Improvement Manager at Community Health Center, Inc., a multi sited health center, located in Connecticut. She has extensive managerial experience in both acute and primary care. Before joining the Quality Improvement Department, Deb was the Nurse Manager at CHC’s Meriden site, and has worked at the health center for ten years. She is the current Chair of the Patient Education Committee. Ms. Ward has held primary responsibility for coordination of grants that focused on improved Hypertension and Diabetes control. She has completed Clinical Microsystems training at the Dartmouth Institute, receiving her Coaching Credentialing Certificate and currently coach’s three active Microsystems teams. Ms. Ward is also CHC’s lead coach, responsible to provide ongoing support for all of CHC’s coaches, to continue spread of Microsystems teams at CHC, and lead CHC’s ECHO Coaches International sessions.

Karen Schifferdecker, PhD, MPH

Karen is an Assistant Professor at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and Associate Director of the Center for Program Design and Evaluation. A medical anthropologist, she has extensive experience overseeing and conducting evaluation projects and programs in institutions, clinical sites, and community-based settings using both quantitative and qualitative research methods. She has evaluated grant- and non-grant funded studies since 1992 and conducts and disseminates educational research and materials on these and other projects. Examples of her grant- and contract-funded experience include the Center for Disease Control Prevention Research Center at Dartmouth (Co-PI), the Multi-specialty MOC Portfolio Approval Program (evaluator), the Africa Routine Immunization System Essentials — System Innovation Component funded by John Snow Inc. (evaluator), and a randomized controlled trial of an educational intervention with 24 primary care practices on use of online resources funded by the National Library of Medicine (PI).

Sharon has an MS in Clinical and Health Services Research from the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, and an MBA from Boston University. With over 20 years of experience as project manager and research professional, Ms. O’Connor provides program leadership in research design and evaluation, including questionnaire, data collection, and analysis design and planning. A skilled analyst and communicator, she has worked in diverse work environments requiring high levels of collaboration and teamwork in private, public and non-profit agencies. Ms. O’Connor specializes in translating quantitative and qualitative data into clear, concise evidence and actionable results.
